How to tell if a designer really knows the work

A nice portfolio is a start, but it doesn't tell you much. Here are questions worth asking any designer, including us.

Listen for vague answers. A designer who can't say who builds the site is probably handing it to someone else. One who can't say what happens to your rankings hasn't thought about it. And one who won't talk about tracking may not want to be measured. Clear, direct answers are a good sign.

• Who will actually build my site? Is it the person I'm talking to?
• How will you decide what goes on each page?
• What happens to my Google rankings when the new site goes live?
• How will I know whether the site is producing calls?
• Can I edit my own content after launch?
• Who do I call when something breaks?

Plain language, not design jargon

A big part of being an expert is explaining things clearly. When we make a design call, we tell you why. If we move your phone number to the top right, we say it's because people look there first. If we cut a section you love, we tell you what we think it costs you.

You don't need to know what a breakpoint or schema markup is. You do need to understand what you're paying for. We'll put it in words you can use, and you can always say no.

Questions are welcome at any point. If something is unclear, ask. Nobody here will make you feel silly for it, and an owner who understands the site is an owner who can use it.

What a project feels like

We start with a kickoff call and a plan with clear milestones. You see designs before anything is built. Feedback happens in defined rounds, so the project doesn't drift. We explain more about how that works on our project management page.

Most projects take four to eight weeks from strategy to launch. At the end, we train you to update your own site. If you'd rather hand updates off, that's an option too.

You'll also know what we need from you and when. If a piece of content is holding things up, we'll say so early and suggest ways to keep moving. Surprises are rare when people talk often, and you can reach us directly.

Where expertise shows up on your site

You can't see most of what an expert does. It's in how the pages are organized, how fast they load, and how clearly search engines can read them. Every site we build has an SEO/AEO foundation: clean headings, metadata, and structured data. That helps you rank in Google and gives AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews a clear picture of your business.

Our recommendations also come from how your market actually searches. We look at what customers type, what your competitors show, and where the gaps are, then design to fill them.

That can be as simple as noticing that every competitor in your market opens with the same stock photo and the same slogan, and designing yours to say something different. Or noticing that nobody nearby has a page for a service customers ask about all the time. Small gaps like those are where a site can stand out.

How to start, and who we aren't right for

The first step is a free discovery call. We talk about your goals, look at your current site, and tell you honestly what we'd do. You'll hear what's worth doing first, and what you can skip. There's no pressure on that call. Some people leave it and decide to improve what they already have. Others book a project. Either way, you leave with a clearer plan than you came with.
