A checklist for hiring local SEO help
Hiring a local SEO company is hard to judge from the outside. Most of the work happens out of sight, and the reports can look impressive without meaning much. So here is a checklist you can use on us and on anyone else you are considering.
Local SEO/AEO is the set of things Google and AI tools use to decide which local business to show: your profile, your pages, your reviews, and your citations. Good services cover all four. Weak ones cover one and call it done.
Use the sections below as a scorecard. Write the answers down for each company you talk to. After two or three calls, the differences are easy to see, and so is the gap between a team that explains its work and one that only describes its results.
What a good local SEO service should include
Ask any company to list what it actually does each month. A real answer has these parts.
- Profile work: categories, services, service areas, photos, and posts.
- Page work: a page for each service and city, not one page for everything.
- Citation work: checking that your name, address, and phone number match across the sites that list you.
- Review work: a plan for getting new reviews and replying to them.
- Reporting: calls, forms, and rankings you can read without a glossary.
Questions to ask before you sign
These questions separate agencies that do the work from agencies that sell the idea of it.
- Who will actually do the work? Is it the people on the sales call, or someone outsourced?
- Do you work with my competitors? Will you take on a second company in my trade and area?
- What will you do in the first 30 days?
- How will I know which calls came from you?
- Is there a long contract? What happens if I leave?
- Who owns my profile, my website, and my reports when we stop?
Red flags
Some warning signs show up again and again. A guaranteed ranking is the biggest one, because no one controls Google. Be wary of packages sold as a list of tasks with no connection to your goals, and of reports that count impressions but not calls.
Be careful with anyone who wants to create a new profile for your business without telling you, or who keeps access to your accounts. And if a company is happy to work for two direct competitors in the same area, ask whose side it is on.
Watch for vague language, too. Phrases like proprietary method or secret process usually hide a standard set of tasks. A good company can explain what it does in plain words, show you an example, and tell you what it will not do.
Finally, look at the sales process. If you are pushed to sign quickly, or the price changes when you hesitate, the service will probably feel the same way later. Good local SEO is steady work, and a good company is comfortable letting you think it over.
What we do and what you get
We are a boutique team. Jared and Rachelle Nelson run it, there are no account managers, and we do not outsource the work. Jared has built websites for high-ticket home service businesses since 2017. We have a 5.0 rating on Google, and BusinessRate named us Best of 2026 for Website Designer in Boise.
On the local side, we manage your Google Business Profile, build the service and city pages, clean up citations, and run a review plan. For a trade-specific view of how the map pack works, see local SEO for trades. You get a monthly Sonar Analytics report showing rankings, reviews, and leads.
What it costs
Prices are posted. Google Business Profile management is $249 per month with a $199 setup. SEO/AEO + GEO is $1,500 per month with a $499 setup. Reputation management is $199 per month with a $299 setup. Sonar Analytics reporting is included with every growth service.
A company that will not tell you its price until you sit through a demo is telling you something. You can see ours on the pricing page.
When you compare prices, compare scope. A low monthly fee that covers only profile edits is not the same as a service that also builds pages, cleans citations, and runs reviews. Ask what is in each price, what the setup fee covers, and whether ad spend or other costs sit on top.
Fit, and what to expect
Our local services are for home service contractors doing $300K or more a year. We take on one contractor per trade per market, and never two in the same trade whose markets overlap. If you are not sure whether you qualify, talk to us and we will say so honestly.
Expect early work to focus on cleanup: fixing profile errors, correcting listings, and building pages. Rankings usually follow, and the timeline depends on your trade and market. If you want to see your tracking set up properly from day one, ask about our call tracking and lead reporting.
Whoever you hire, ask for a first-month plan in writing. It should list what will be fixed, what will be built, and what you will be asked to provide, like photos, access to your profile, and a list of the cities you want to win. A clear plan is a good sign. A vague one usually stays vague.
